UN envoy meets Khaleda again
UN emissary Oscar Fernandez-Taranco met BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday for the second time in three days.
He called on her at her Gulshan residence in the evening after holding meetings with different parties and quarters.
BNP leaders, however, did not divulge what transpired at the meeting.
But Khaleda sat with several of her senior party leaders, including acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, once her meeting with the UN envoy was over.
The UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs arrived in Dhaka on Friday amid the ongoing turmoil with the goal to broker peace between the two feuding major political parties.
He held meetings with the Leader of the Opposition and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the following day.
Fernandez-Taranco is scheduled to leave Dhaka on Tuesday night. Ganabhaban sources, however, said he would meet Hasina in the afternoon for a second time before leaving.
However, the outcome of his hectic talks stretching over three days was still not clear.
Speaking to the media for the first during his current visit, the UN envoy merely said, “There is a possibility of peaceful solution to the current deadlock.”
Awami League leaders met Fernandez-Taranco twice in the past three days but declined to make any clear statement.
After the first meeting on Saturday, ruling party General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam had said they hoped the UN emissary’s visit would be fruitful.
Fernandez-Taranco also met BNP leaders including Vice-Chairman Shamser Mobin Chowdhury on Sunday evening after his first meeting Khaleda Zia. But Chowdhury gave hint of which way the discussions went.
Chowdhury was present at Fernandez-Taranco’s meeting with Khaleda on Monday. Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan and her Advisors Riaz Rahman and Sabih Uddin Ahmed were also there.
After the one-hour-long meeting, the main opposition’s Assistant Office Secretary Abdul Latif Jony told reporters, “They [party leaders] won’t say anything yet.”
After a while, responding to queries, Shamser Mobin Chowdhury said, “Many issues including the elections were discussed. The process is still on. I can’t say anything further right now.”
Earlier in the day, after meeting the UN Assistant Secretary General, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, in a cheerful mood, told reporters, “Important discussion is going on. Let’s see what actually happens.”
Meanwhile, after Fernandez-Taranco left, several BNP leaders led by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir entered Khaleda’s Gulshan residence at 7:30pm.
Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Nazrul Islam Khan, party chief’s Advisors Osman Faruk, Riaz Rahman and Sabih Uddin Ahmed was attending the meeting.
The UN envoy on Monday held a meeting with BNP key ally Jamaat-e-Islami.
He also met Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad and a civil society delegation led by Dr Kamal Hossain on Sunday.
Of the foreign diplomats in Dhaka, Fernandez-Taranco in the last three days also held meetings with US ambassador Dan Mozena, Indian High Commissioner Pankaj Saran and Russian ambassador Alexander A Nikolaev.
